What Is a
Chemical Peel?
A chemical peel is a non-surgical cosmetic skin treatment. A chemical peel uses a solution to exfoliate (remove) the top layers of the facial skin, which encourages new skin to grow. The result is a smoother skin surface that is more “even,” both in tone and texture, as surface-level wrinkling and hyperpigmentation are reduced. Most chemical peel treatments can be accomplished within about an hour.

There Are Three Types of Chemical Peels
The primary difference between the types of peels is the level of the peel—light, medium or deep. What does that mean?
- A light peel uses AHAs (alpha-hydroxy acids) for a gentle exfoliation. These are wonderful for fine lines, acne, dryness, and uneven skin tone.
- A medium chemical peel uses stronger acids, such as TCA (trichloroacetic acid) or glycolic acid, both of which penetrate deeper into the skin to minimize age spots, sun damage, moderate hyperpigmentation, and more significant wrinkles.
- A deep chemical peel uses a very strong chemical, such as phenol, to treat the most severe sun damage and hyperpigmentation, as well as deeper wrinkles. Results are often quite dramatic, and the skin looks significantly smoother after healing. A deep chemical peel requires more recovery time than the light and medium peels, and necessitates very careful application by an experienced physician, such as Dr. Mark A. Clymer.
Recovery from a Chemical Peel
After a light or medium peel, your skin will feel as if you have a sunburn. Most of Dr Clymer’s light chemical peel patients opt to take the rest of the day off following treatment, as their skin is red and a bit tender. Medium-peel patients may choose to stay out of the limelight for 2-3 days. Patients who choose a deep peel require the longest recovery time. All peels result in redness, peeling and flaking to some degree.* Your anticipated recovery time will be covered in your private consultation, so you know what to expect.

“I cannot say enough how amazing Dr. Clymer and all of his staff are. Professional, caring and supportive. He was recommended to me very highly, and he did not disappoint. Trusting your face and health to someone, it is so important to choose the right doctor. He is simply amazing!*”
