What do you use to wipe or blow your nose? A Kleenex™, right? Actually, it’s a “tissue”. Kleenex™ is one brand but has been used so commonly for so long that the name has become synonymous with the object. A similar thing exists with BOTOX™ and Dysport™. BOTOX™ was the first medicine used for the treatment of facial lines and wrinkles and is so popular that people refer to having “botox” treatments. What they are actually referring to is having a medicine injected into the muscles that cause wrinkles. There are a number of these medicines available, but the two most popular are BOTOX™ and Dysport™. The actual chemical name of BOTOX™ is Onabotulinumtoxin A, and Dysport™ is Abobotulinumtoxin A. Pretty similar, right? These two products both are most commonly used to relax the muscles that cause lines and wrinkles in the face. I am often asked the difference, and as you can see chemically they are almost identical. The real question that most patients want to know is which is better for them? The answer depends on each patient, and both products get excellent results. My patients tend to prefer Dysport™, as they see a longer benefit time with Dysport™. The longer it lasts, the fewer office visits, and less cost to the patient. There are a few patients in my practice that experience longer results with BOTOX™. So, at Clymer Facial Plastic Surgery we offer both products and advise each patient which product is likely best for them.
